“Rethinking European Security” Book Proposal Workshop
The final workshop of the GRADEU Jean Monnet Module was organized as the concluding event of the project and as a platform to present its key achievements. The workshop provided an opportunity to evaluate the Module’s teaching activities, research integration, and dissemination efforts, while also fostering dialogue among participants about the lessons learned and the added value of the initiative for EU studies.
In addition to reflecting on the outcomes of the Module, the workshop also hosted the first meeting of contributors to the edited volume Rethinking European Security. This publication will carry forward the themes explored within the Module and extend its academic and policy relevance. The workshop thus functioned both as a closing event and as a starting point for future collaborative research activities
The main aim of the workshop was to ensure continuity and sustainability of the project outcomes. By connecting the final reflections on the Module with the initial steps of the book project, the event created a bridge between completed activities and future academic outputs. The expected impact is to consolidate the network built during the Module, to expand scholarly and policy-oriented debates on European security, and to strengthen the visibility of the EU dimension in global risk governance.
Outcomes of the Module Presentation:
In the closing workshop, the project team presented the main outcomes of the GRADEU Jean Monnet Module (2022–2025). Over the course of six semesters, the Module combined undergraduate and graduate teaching with thematic seminars on global risks, delivering a total of 312 hours of lectures and seminars. These activities benefited more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students from Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University and other universities, significantly expanding the reach of EU-related education.
The Module also integrated and activated four new EU-related courses into the AYBU curriculum at different levels, thereby strengthening the institutional capacity for EU studies. In addition, an online project workshop was organized, and a dedicated webpage was created to share project activities and outputs with a wider audience.
In terms of academic production, the Module generated a journal article draft, multiple conference presentations, op-eds, and a book proposal, contributing both to scholarly debates and policy-oriented discussions. Dissemination efforts were further reinforced through active use of social media accounts, which broadened the project’s visibility and societal impact.
The Workshop and the Edited Volume
The workshop was organized at the end of the project rather than in the originally planned 30th month, as this timing was considered more effective. Holding the event at the conclusion of the Module made it possible to review achievements while also discussing the content and structure of the forthcoming edited book Rethinking European Security.
During the workshop, the book proposal was updated, the publication process was discussed, and different publishing strategies were evaluated. Following these discussions, it was agreed to submit the proposal to Leiden University Press. The participants also committed to reconvene as the book progresses, ensuring that collaboration continues beyond the formal project period.
The workshop further advanced the edited volume by expanding the pool of contributors. Since some project members were not able to take part in the writing phase, new academics were invited, creating a broader scholarly network. In total, 13 academics are now preparing a 15-chapter volume, which will represent a major academic outcome of the Module.
This deliverable includes the updated version of the book proposal Rethinking European Security, reflecting the academic trajectory of the GRADEU Jean Monnet Module and its continuing contribution beyond the project’s completion.
